On the 35i I would say just for looks. The larger engines have them for additional cooling required.

My 50i only has the passenger side open…the driver side is closed. I wanna say it was certain diesels that had them both open?

If you’re willing to split them I may be interested in the driver’s side

The M50d version has the driver side open grille and the 50i has the passenger side open grille.

Not looking to split them at this point.
