Losing a lot of oil
Hey guys. I’m curious if you all have an answer to this. I have a 2012 m5 with 96k miles on it. It’s been losing a ton of oil. ZERO leaks or smoke at all. I’d say it’s losing a quart every 500 miles which seems really high. I replaced the pcv valves with no luck. Could this be pcv system related or possibly valve stem seals? Or bottom end is in need of a refresh? Any help would be appreciated. TIA.

5/40 is what a lot of US owners use. If valve stem seals were worn there would be smoke from exhaust and it's a Canadian car. All you can do if you're sure there are no leaks is top up and try a different recommended grade on oil change time like Mobil 0/40 euro formula and you have put the car in sport + to run on the first digit on the oil temp gauge is all I can suggest for now.

I’m in the same situation here. I bought a 2012 BMW M5 last week (2011 manufactured) and drove 1000km back home, now the car is at 116000km. I’m now down to 1/2 scale after I topped up to maximum about 200km ago (no typo) meaning I have to top up 1 litre every 400km. I don’t notice any leaks nor any abnormal smokes which could be caused by bad piston rings or valve stem seals, recently the PCV has been repaired. The car drives fine and I do always drive it hard every time when it’s warm. I guess it’s just due to the design of engine.
Also I believe the rod bearings does not have a relationship with oil consumption and they should be replaced when you see metal shavings in oil/filter. Oil change is also a good time to see if you are leaking any oil under, will soon be due for my car. I’m not a mechanic here but here are just my thoughts so please correct me if I’m wrong. |

It’s the horrible design of early N63 engines they overheat too much as the turbos are on the top they drink oil and eats the valve stem seals until the later G series N63 and S63 engines unless there’s extreme smoke coming from the exhaust I’d leave it alone and make sure oil level is ok.
