Hello everyone I just purchased a 2014 f10 m5
with nearly 100,000 miles on it. The service history was very good on the car with oil changes being done regularly at BMW service centers. After doing some research I saw that the rod bearings could be an issue but other sources say they aren't an issue on the S63TU. Additionally saw that upgrading the thermostat so that it opens up at a lower temp than stock is beneficial for the engine life. And then additionally the I know with the car being just at 100,000 miles I will have to replace the Vanos solenoids. Does anyone have any experiences with this as well as any recommendation in what parts to use? |

- Rod Bearings. ACL Race bearings are the best here. Can be done in-car. Get oil analysis done to check for metal. - Valve stem seals. Check for smoke from exhaust - best method: Let the car idle for about 10min, then blip the throttle - if you see smoke coming out, VSS need changing. - Injectors - Coils & Plugs - Full oil change - engine, diff, transmission That's the main ones. I haven't heard as much about VANOS solenoids failing in this car. There's a good vid on the S63TU on YouTube recently put up by FCP Euro. Good shops to look at pricing: Schmeidmann FCP Euro ECS Tuning Trodo Latvia Partsgeek |

Usually the rod bearings fail when the oil get diluted with fuel. You can always do oil samples with Blackstone analysis to see if any aluminum materials are found. The main culprit for the fuel dilution is the high pressure fuel pumps leaking internally and injectors. You can get Bosch replacements for fairly cheap. You don't need to upgrade the thermostat. If you run the engine in sport plus mode you'll notice your oil temp dropping because it commands it to run cooler.

I have the same car and same mileage. Curious to know what you did. I changed the rear differential fluid, transmission fluid, brake fluid flush, rotors pads. But want to avoid any grenades. The car burns practically no oil surprisingly.
New rod bearings are next ASAP then coolant flush and plugs, injectors and coils. Any thoughts on replacing fuel pumps, turbo lines? Looking at upgrades that might take this car from 100k to 150k miles. Any recs? Like larger transmission pan? |

Thoughts on rod bearings?? I’ve seen a lot of YT vids w spun bearings in the S63TU. Scared of grenades like that. If you do the rod bearings, let us know and which brand you use if not OEM.

From what I’ve seen oil changes every 3k miles and oil analysis from blacksmith if you notice aluminum as the guy above mentioned then it is time to replace them.
From everything I’ve seen the oil intervals are a lot tighter than other cars and the rod bearings are not a marjor issue as long as you do regular oil changes and use proper oil. Yeah the rod bearings can grenade but just let your car warm up to temp and don’t be redlining everywhere you go. |

As stated by B58 above, bearing failures are almost always caused by diluted oil. You can put brand new bearings in an S63, have an injector stick open and lose a bearing.

hope to be active on this thread. i just purchased a 2013 M5 with 67k miles. service records and condition appear to indicate that it was well kept and not tuned. first thing i opted for was an oil change with an oil analysis - awaiting the results. getting a diagnostic tool too, and goal is to complete basic maintenance myself. This will be everyday vehicle, 80% or more highway driving in all weather conditions, so i'll be getting a second set of OEM wheels with winter tires for thanksgiving thru St Paddy's day.
I am not handy enough and don't have the tools for rod bearing replacement. FWIW, the shop that handles my 996 turbo (weekend cruiser) quoted 60 hours to replace the rod bearings on the s63 which is about $12,000 in labor alone for my neck of the woods. Hoping the oil analysis comes back with a clean bill of health, and regular (every 5k) oil changes keeps everything running well. |

My 2015 f10 220d works fine on flat surfaces with changing to all gears no issue. But when climbing hill it will get stuck on to gears and then no gears at all with drive train fault.
After engine off and turn On the engine light and drive train error goes with full engine power again. WHAT TO DO PLEASE |
