Enjoy!

P.S.: I have a 335i and I do know that the 1-series has a tighter engine bay, but it is quite possible this will work for you guys as well.

Interesting idea, but I think since there are 2 incoming air tracks, will they cause air turbulance inside the air box and hence less air goes in the engine? Who knows it work or not?

It already flows a lot better. My car feels completely "uncorked"! So I thought I'd write a DIY document of the work I did and share it.

EDIT: A bunch of 335i guys are already running this and intakes with similar design.

There's only been good responses with Dinan and Mr. 5 style air intake modifications. Perhaps there's either little or no turbulence or what little there is is outweighed by the larger amount of intake air coming in.

My thought's exactly. I have my intake setup like this though a little less refined and I've switched back and forth between the stock box, DCI, and this Mr.5/Helix/Dinan setup and found this to be the best compromise. I just couldn't find space for the filter in the bumper area with an upgraded FMIC and filter selection I had so I went this route.

Very nice write up.

I feel like this would be sucking more air from inside the engine bay rather than clean air. Looks pretty though.

This mod is what people refer to as the "Mr. 5" intake mod since Mr. 5(over on the e90 forum) was the first to try this. And yes, it does make more power. Alpina also has a simular airbox design.

Yes, very interesting. One should be able to make it fit based on my install of the Injen DCI. I thought about the Mr 5 install but thought the Injen was an easier install and is based on almost the same principle. I was wrong about the install as it was a PITA b/c of my oversized Forge DVs. Oh well...happy with the Injen system.

I think the only way to install Meth (w/Injen DCi) would be with a windshield washer reservoir system, but that may only be an add-on for JB4.

@Dackelone: Mr. 5's intake is slightly different. It uses a long flex hose and positions the secondary filter in the lower fender area of the driver side engine bay. As noted in my DIY, performing maintenance on the filter is very difficult and the flex hose introduces turbulence. This is why I opted for the shorter pipe and a smooth 90-degree bend

@ken1137: I have Forge DVs and I designed it to work with them.

I've seen couple of uses installing their meth pumps horizontally under the radiator support bracket or behind the bumper cover.

This has been debated over numerous times on every N54 forum. Search and you'll come to your own conclusion. This in my opinion is the best compromise between the stock box (which has been shown to be restrictive when pushing boost ie "tuned" N54's) and the DCI or Dual cone intakes from Burger, AFE, Injen ect ect which suck in engine bay air as well.

Basically when tuned above 13psi on this platform the stock box becomes restrictive in turn pushing the turbo's harder. At this point it's best to upgrade your intake. At first DCI's were the first on the scene, it had been shown to reduce turbo workload on tuned vehicles trough the logging of wastegate positioning. But alas the question came out with the hot air being sucked in. Then Dinan came out with their version of this intake, then Mr5, helix now vasillalov.

In conclusion if your stock stick with the stock box, but if your tuned your best bet is this intake. If your really worried about IAT's get an upgraded FMIC that's what it's there for to cool down post turbo air or a meth kit.

I am already running DCI so I am already sucking in hot air anyway - this will be an improvement.

Plus I got FMIC and meth so my IAT is pretty low as is...

I'd love to see how your final setup would be in the engine bay. Right now I have a BOV thats in the way and potential meth kit that doesnt really help free up space.

I will need to tinker around to see where I can place my meth pump and still have easy access to do maintenance - some of the spots that people have put makes it hard.

I also got a Tial Q BOV but that shouldn't be in the way as there is placed very close towards the firewall.
