N55 IC Dyno Results

Thought you guys might be interested in some objective intercooler dyno testing! I would also add that the 5" ETS FMIC is on the small side and there are larger ones available, like the ER core so I will have to see if I can get BMS to do some more testing.

Quote:
Last week we put an ETS 5" intercooler on the N55 135i for evaluation and just today had a chance to get to the dyno for some objective testing.

The car is our DCT with a JB4 and our DP, intake, chagepipe, and WW meth kit. We used 93 octane (91 + 1 can of octane booster), same as our November testing. Weather was similar in the 60s.

The good: The IC is a nice direct fit and although it took a bit of wrangling to get the cold side piping on it does not require any cutting. On the road when running off meth I've noticed the car is less susceptible to heat soak during back to back runs. Dyno gains on map 2 look to be around 8-10rw at higher RPM.

The bad: Unfortunately when really maxing things out on methanol we didn't notice any substantial gains. When meth is flowing it offsets the IAT advantage and I just don't think the OEM N55 turbo flows enough to take advantage of the higher flow characteristics of the intercooler. I'm a little disappointed as I was really looking for that extra edge to get the car up and over the 400rw hump. Work continues there. On the plus side the trans was holding a little better today than it was back in Nov. Seems to be really hit and miss when I get over 440wtq.

Overall I'm pleased with the fit and quality. And will definitely be enjoying the extra 8-10hp when not using map 3.
