misfire cylinder 2.. help me diagnose?

Hey guys,

The car: 08 135i coupe

The situation:

Had JB4 and DCI only for month or 2. Car has 35k miles, not yet had its big service. BMW just replaced Vanos solenoids due to a CEL (warranty) I had once at WOT in 4th gear on map 1. Directly after that, WOT in 3rd and all of a sudden at about 4k RPM SES came on and threw the car in limp mode. It now does it everytime I go WOT, but only on map 1, map 4 (stock) is just fine. After what felt like a misfire, SES light comes on and any throttle whatsoever makes the car stutter and shake terribly, it won't accelerate. Turn off and back on and everything is fine, no lights, it runs normally.

Found these codes today:

29CE Misfirings, cylinder 2
29D9 Misfirings in case of tank filling level too low

Any ideas?

Replace spark plugs. If that doesn't work swap coil packs with another cylinder to see if the problem follows the coil pack.

I had a similar issue with misfires/shake on my e92/N54. Dealership ended up changing the fuel pump and injectors as well as a SW update.

It sounds like you are describing an ignition related issue. I would look into the spark plugs and coil packs first.

when u guys change/swap the coil packs, do you have to get them coded or tuned by BMW?

fun fact. When my injectors went it started with a misfire in cylinder 2

Muhahahahahahahaha

no thats a lie, it was 3, 4 & 5 that were the troublemakers. However, if it isnt plugs and coil packs the injectors should be your next thing on the list. Its an expensive fix (trust me on that one)

Have you had them checked under the recall yet?

Thanks guys!

Will check spark plugs then coil packs then injectors. I havn't taken it up with BMW yet because it only misfires w map 1. There are no problems they can replicate stock. Hopefully the spark plugs or coils take care of it so I can move on makin more powa!

Just a thought. With a tune in the car its typically recommended that you half the replacement time on plugs.

Basically youre supposed to replace them every 20-25K miles because the extra stress from the tune consumes them faster.

So if your tune was installed last month and youve been rather aggressive on the throttle, its possible that its simply the last nail being put in your plugs coffin, as they should be changed every 45-50K miles anyway.

Just to add to the archives for people who search this:

My problem ended up being the coil on cylinder 2. I plugged in my laptop to the JB4 and saw the misfire code on cylinder 2. Swapped coils with cylinder 1 and the misfire appeared on cylinder 1. Replaced only that coil and everything is back to normal. Hopefully I won't have to replace another for a while but hey now I know where to check first

I had exactly the same problem in mine but in the 6 cyl.

Y started changing the sparks and misfire remained there. Then I tested with a new coil and it kept in the 6 cyl. Finally, last night I swapped injectors 6 to 1, hoping the error code moves to the 1 cyl, BUT it dissapeared and the misfires too.

And dont know why exactly it dissapeared, but its gone. May be it will appear soon again. I hope in the 1 cyl...
