help .. check engine light on .. vacuum leak ? video attached
Hi there,
I have rough idles , but when I turn on the ac the idle is fine. I popped up the hood and weird noise, I have attached a clip . I think its a vacuum leak. the check engine light came on after 10min , and its giving me 4 codes. 1- sensor in bank 1 detected lean 2- sensor in bank 2 detected lean 3- misfire cylinder 2 4- misfire cylinder 4 what do you guys think? and when i press my hand on that hole in the clip nothing happens, i think they put electrical tape on it . car runs fine other than rough idle. is there any place in particular i should look when both bank 1 and 2 sensors detect lean ? |

After the car is warmed up, shut it off and unplug your MAF sensor. Restart it. If the idle is smooth, then you've isolated the issue to either a bad or dirty MAF sensor, or a vacuum leak. When you unplug the MAF sensor you will get an associated SES light, but I believe it can be reset by unplugging the battery.

okay , so I turned the car off, cleaned the maf. I started the car again with the cleaned maf connected still rough idle. I turned it off and unplugged the maf, and again rough idle !!! so the car now without the maf connected also has a rough idle.
There is a weard couple clicks coming when i start the car. I have attached a clip of that as well Last edited by hessan; 09-01-2012 at 11:27 PM.. |

Well at least you know the issue is probably not a vacuum leak.
You need fuel, air, spark, and timing. If you're running lean you have issues with inadequate fuel delivery, either because the car isn't physically able to deliver the fuel (unlikely at idle) or because adequate fuel isn't requested (more likely). If you have a misfire you have issues with improper mixture or timing. The ECU has ultimate control, but before you blame the decision maker, first look at the various sensors that may be giving it bad information to work with... MAP, IAT, etc. There's also the possibility of a VANOS failure. M54 VANOS units used improper seals, and the seals are commonly upgraded. Doctor Vanos sells rebuilt units, and a company called Beisan markets upgraded VANOS seals with a DIY replacement guide.

Was there a hole in your intake boot? I'm on my phone and can't tell from the video. If you see a problem, definitely fix it first.
