LCI steering wheel retrofit
anyone knows the size difference in diameter between pre-LCI & LCI steering wheels?
Also, for those who have done such retrofit to their 2012/2013 M5, please share your experience. Thanks. |

Remember to disconnect the battery first, but wait 10 minutes after the car shuts off before doing so. Computer has to fully shut down. You'll need 10mm driver for the bolts. Battery's in the trunk. Two plastic bolts to remove the panel, loosen the negative terminal to disconnect.
For the wheel, this video shows the process pretty well: The airbag yellow single wire plug is a bit tricky. Lift up towards you on the piece at the end of the plug facing you to disengage before trying to pull it out. See the attached photo. I highlighted the part where you want to lift up on. Center nut is 15mm, so make sure you have that driver. The bolts |

Thanks for the tips.
not sure I can do it myself. will need to find a shop that I can trust. Also checking if BMW is willing to do it. BTW, how much smaller in diameter is the new steering wheel? |

Are u referring to retrofitting the M6 steering wheel onto F10 M5 pre-LCI? I retrofitted the M6 steering wheel onto my M5 late last year with no issue. The most important part is ensuring that you order all the parts required factoring in stuffs like lane departure warning, etc...The next thing is to have the dealer assemble the new wheel for you before installing. I got a trusted workshop to do the installation. They took less than 5 mins to remove the M5 wheel, and another 1 min to install the pre-assembled M6 wheel. Everything worked without issue.

There are pre-assembled full M6 wheels out there (got mine from a member on m5board).
If you are buying all the parts separately consider the new m performance wheels. There's a pretty sweet one with a digital rev meter on the top. |

The M6 steering wheel is the same as LCI M5, right?
what do you guys think of the new shift paddles? I'm not really pleased with mine (pre-LCI), the paddles are not within comfortable reach, & I don't like the loud 'click' sound when shifting. |

I went to the dealer today & there was a LCI M5 for me to check out. I actually measured the steering wheel:
LCI: 370 mm in diameter Pre-LCI: 385 mm in diameter I like this steering wheel much more than mine : the size, the look, the paddles. It just makes more sense. The next question is, where to order it & the necessary parts ? Anyone can share info on this? Appreciate it. |

After the retrofit, all buttons (M1, M2, cruise control, mode, +, -, etc) & paddles work & function without any issue, right ?
My car doesn't have steering heating, lane change warning, driver assistant, so less to worry about. Just wanna reconfirm before pulling the trigger. Thanks. |

They will never guarantee anything as it's not a BMW sanctioned retrofit. I took the risk and am glad it worked. Of course, it wasn't all shooting in the dark. I worked with the parts guy studying the connectors of the 2 steering wheels and determined that it would work. Anyway, many have gone before u without issue, so why the concern?

What I don't understand is why it took them 3 weeks to get back to me with the answer. Anyway, thanks for the reassurance. I'll go for it. |

Can you PM me the parts list you ordered ? It looks like I hadn't included the multi-function buttons, the control unit, & the paddles. Thanks. |

Thanks a lot for that.
It looks like some parts have common parts numbers & some don't (between LCI M5, & M6 GC, coupe & convertible). What I've ordered (not yet arrived) based on LCI M5 (with no heating, no lane change warning, no driving assistant functions) are : 32307846034 Strng wheel 32307846029 Decor. Trim 32307848270 Cover 32307848330 Line 32307848333 Screws 32311159951 Bolt 32307845795 Airb. module Obviously, I'm missing the multi-function switch, rocket switch set & control unit. The question is : what parts numbers should be referred to when it comes to LCI M5 ? Please help shed some light. |
