Is M5 good as daily driver?
Hey guys! I'm thinking of ordering the M5, but I drove it just about 30 miles so I don't have idea how it performs as a daily driver. AND anybody drives it in winter? - if yes tell me your opinion how it performs on snowy roads.

Mine is DD. you will need a good set of winter tires, for sure. If you have lots of snow & ice in your city, then you are good for about 15-20cm of snow and anything beyond that would be very tricky to drive, esp. if your daily route has lots of incline (going up hill).

After snowfall road is cleaned of course, but there is still few cm's of snow. My work is about 50 km away from home and there's a lot of hills, and corners, but thankfully road is wide enough to drift in your lane. But that's not a problem, I could buy another car in future.
btw: I test drove the new E63 S (AWD) and IMO it was AWFUL, no really I hated E63, and I don't know why, I just don't liked it at all.

Yes its one if not the main reason to get this car is to DD it.
I drive on the super sports in DC winter (0degrees-30degrees) with light snow (it has major flaws above an inch, or with a great deal of frozen slush (but really its a summer tire what do you expect). Other than that if you're driving normally the car preforms fine. I doubt I could make it through too many more snow days but if its under 7 where you live you'll be fine. I've had it since Oct and I'm at 9,000 miles. If anything the car is too good a driver and if you're looking to feel something like I had in the M3 you might be a tad unhappy (as I am which is why I'm getting an m4). |

Dude except on crazy days you don't need awd and that's coming from an awd fanboy... I'm driving on the pss and the car is fine except maybe for 5 days so far where I might have been truly screwed.

Funny I'm also in DC. I traded my X5M in for the M5 in early November and totally have been kicking myself. Don't get me wrong, it's a fabulous car, better than any of the reviews says it is. But after the last eight weeks of freezing cold, Dustin's, slush and stuff the car isn't going to cut it. The rear wheels spin out constantly from all the power on the OE tires. You definitely need all seasons or winters.
I'm going back to an SUV. Jeff |

Me too - great daily drive. Here in Calgary we regularly are way below freezing eg this morning was -15C and its fine. You obviously need to be careful because its rear wheel drive but with good winters you'll be fine.

I use mine as a DD and I love it. I cant speak to the winter use as I live in SC. We don't usually get the crazy winters like up north.

those OE tires are summer and in -5C and below, the rubber compound will become much harder ... like a hockey puck and when the rubber does not flex, it does not grip in snowy & icy condition and that's why you are damned lucky in not getting into any collision and/or accident. If you can afford a $100K car, you can certainly be smart and dish out another $3-4K in a winter set tires & wheels for the sake of safety.

I use it as a daily driver and love it. We have no snow issues here in Texas so I can't answer your snow question directly, but I think the traction control will have its way with you in the snow. Have you considered an Audi S6. My buddy has the new one and it's also loaded with power, but also AWD.

You can get winter tires only (top of the line ones) for about $1200.

I use mine as a daily driver and have no complaints. Spend a lot of time on the phone during my commute and the road noise can be a bit loud for the other party when using hands free. Do not live where it snows...

I live in the northeast and have to say I only considered the M5 because I take the ferry to Manhattan and dont have to drive daily. However, this winter has been harsh with freezing temps and a lot of snow. Ive now driven on three occaisions in light snow, then moderate unplowed snow, and ice and I am VERY impressed with how the M5 handles. I have the Blizzak LM60s.
This experience has really opened my eyes to how many cars can be very capable if equipped with the "right set of rubbers". I am by no means an experienced winter driver, but definitely way more capable than those down in Hotlanta. I just try to be very cautious and start off in 2nd gear as opposed to 1st in snow or ice. I wish BMW had left this winter mode which I had in my e46 M3 SMG, starting off in 2nd gear. I noticed in the F10 that if you are on an incline, it wont permit u to shift and start off in 2nd.

I echo the sentiments above. It can be a great daily driver. In fact, that is the entire design of the car; the whole "wolf in sheep's clothing" theme. I have my car shod in Pirelli Sottozeros. I am very happy with them as winter tires, but they are definitley inclined (no pun intended) to dry, cold conditions rather than deep snow.
Peronally, I would not use this as a daily driver if that daily drive involves snow and ice conditions with any frequency. Having to deal with light snow occasionally would not stop me if I had proper winter rubber. Living in the Northeast, I would want some form of 4x4 (even a beater Subaru or something) as an alternative when the roads turn more difficult.
